Explore the American Anthropological Association’s website www.aaanet.org.

In particular take a look at their new “This is Anthropology” website. In your reaction paper for this website try to answer the following questions.

What did you learn about Anthropology that you didn’t already know?

What do you think would be the most interesting type of career in Anthropology?

What do you think would be the most boring career in Anthropology?

Overall critique this website. What is good about it? What problems do you see with it? What suggestions do you have for improving the website to give people a better sense of what Anthropology is all about?

In writing a reaction paper to this website remember the general guidelines from your syllabus:

This assignment is designed to give you a chance to work on your writing skills, to practice thinking critically and to gain in-depth knowledge about anthropological issues. The assignment is to write a personal reaction to your reading. This is not a book report. Don’t simply summarize what you read, but present your personal reaction and/or opinion.

Use your own words to evaluate this website. If you must use another author’s words (and this should only be done sparingly) they must be placed within quotation marks and referenced. If you use the author’s words without quotation marks, or if you paraphrase the author too closely, it is considered plagiarism. Plagiarism is an academic offense. The penalty for plagiarism is failure of the assignment, failure of the course, or in extreme cases, expulsion from the University. Besides, if you are using someone elses words you probably aren’t properly addressing the assignment. I want to know what you think. Just as copying the author’s words is plagiarism, so is copying from any other person or source. This type of copying is subject to the same penalties. If you have any questions about plagiarism see me or check the catalog under Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures.

This reaction should be at least 2 pages in length, single sided, double 1.0 line space and typed at a font size of 10-12. Don’t use overly large fonts and/or spacing, my old eyes aren’t that bad yet. The paper should be carefully edited. If there are more than two of the same type of grammatical errors on a single page a point will be subtracted for each error after the second. For example, if you have three misspellings on one page you will lose one point. If you have a fourth you will lose two points. A hard copy can be turned in during class or submitted on MOODLE. These papers or worth 20 points each.

You shouldn’t hesitate to seek my help and advice or go to the Writing Center in Eicher Hall (2nd floor) or their new satellite center at the library. At the Writing Center you can schedule an appointment with one of their staff, to help you edit your paper. You may contact me by email, [email protected]. Don’t wait until the last minute.
