Many people in the work force need to communicate with influence for various different reasons. This includes (but is not limited to):
- Job seekers and those seeking promotion
- Managers, supervisors and team leaders
- Technical or health and safety specialists
- Marketing or sales personnel
- Training, coaching and mentoring personnel
This task involves selecting the group (forum) for the presentation and then designing your presentation to suit your audience. For this reason, it is recommended that you select an area of work that you are familiar with. You need to consider the ways in which the group needs to communicate, the people they communicate with, and how they need to influence and persuade people.
Think about meetings they may attend, negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution they need to undertake, information they need to present and the organisational protocols they will need to follow in releasing information. Build your presentation to focus on these areas in a way that shows the importance of communicating with influence, both internally and externally.
- Commence preparing your presentation using the table below.
Identify your target group (the forum for presenting your business case) |
How will you introduce the presentation and confirm your personal credentials as an expert in communicating with influence? |
In what ways do your target group need to communicate with people – who with and how? |
Why is it necessary for your target group to communicate with influence? |
What are your own organisation’s protocols for releasing information when communicating internally and how might such protocols apply to your audience? |
How can you communicate with influence? What skills and techniques do you need to use? |
Discuss the way communicating with influence promotes a win-win solution in negotiation. |
Discuss the way you can de-escalate and resolve conflict by communicating with influence. |
Give one example (story) which may be a success story or a cautionary tale to illustrate your point. |
How will you summarise in a short conclusion before asking for questions. |
