Referencing specific photos of your peer’s work, offer a response that considers the statement’s CONTENT–what their statement says and how they say it– as well as CONTEXT–where it’s written, and in relation to what.
Write about TWO photos in particular for each of the two peers: what do they capture differently? How is the statement charged with new meaning and complications when it meets public space–a SPECIFIC public space–and in the specific manner in which it does so?
Some other questions worth considering:
-In the photos, what are people doing nearby? How do their activities influence the reception of the statement, and therefore its meaning?-Are these statements written in chalk more or less likely to be read? By what kind of audience in particular?-Does the statement’s degree of visibility (likeliness to be read) reflect the person who chalked it? Does the statement’s visibility reflect the statement? How?-Would you be willing to write YOUR statement in paint? Carve it in stone? How big would you be willing to make it? Why?
