Below are the set of additional instructions for the Research Data Exercise (please see Handout for the instructions for the first part of this assessment). In this surgery we are using Nature Conservatory’s ClimateWizard. You can produce climate change predictions in specific regions under different emission scenarios. We will use this data to generate locally specific climate change adaptation scenarios, considering local, national, geopolitical and political-economic parameters.
Step 1: Familiarise yourself with the IPCC’s emission scenarios which provide the base dataset for the climate wizard. These are based on an average of various General Circulation Models (GCM), generating local predictions.
You will find that you can generate data about future predicted temperature increase as well as changes in precipitation.
Step 2: Chose a region where you think climate change will have a significant social, political and/or economic impact and download the data sets into a spreadsheet.
Step 3: Speculate about the potential impact of two different emission scenarios in relation to one region, considering local, regional and global socio-economic conditions.
Step 4: Based on your assessment, provide a brief set of policy recommendations helping affected communities and institutions to improve adaptation capacities and build resilience.
Step 5 (final): sum up your findings on the links between existing socio-economic and political insecurities, likely temperature and precipitation changes, future risks and policy recommendations (approx. 300 words).
