Identify issues facing the operation of hospital emergency departments, • Create a process map (or flow chart) for a NSW hospital emergency department admission into acute care who then becomes an inpatient in the ward (refer website https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Performance/Pages/emergency.aspx), • Review the relationship between process effectiveness and patient care in hospital emergency departments, • Discuss the application of new technology (IT, systems, etc.) in the operational practices of hospital emergency departments, • Describe the current and potential challenges faced by managers of hospital emergency departments, • Provide some recommendations for improving the operation of hospital emergency departments.
