Essay 2 / 3 The Animal Paper ( I’m doing mine on Grey hound racing) In the early 20th century, one book rocked the ideas of what was in the local sausage: The Jungle. This text made visible the hidden ways that producers engaged in unhealthy animal and human treatment. While the text was meant to bring about discussion around the treatment of the immigrant community in America, the text shed a spotlight that required a closer look by consumers. In the book, Eating Animals, the author is on a quest to understand why people make the choices to eat the animals that they do and what informs their “line”; how do consumers decide what is an animal they will eat and what is an inedible animal? Where do consumers draw their line of acceptable to not? In uncovering the many ways that animals produced as food are hidden to the consumer, one might ask if they were able to abstain from eating animal products, could they? Are these animal products hidden within other foodstuffs? Can we stop eating animals if we have alternatives? Are the alternatives a good idea too? When you are doing this research, you are not just seeking to understand the food that is being consumed, but the cultural context by which the tradition to it exists. The idea of consumption is not limited to eating. Your paper, depending on what animal you select, will examine the human consumption in the ways relevant to the animal, including their use as entertainment, medicine, or clothing. Humans consume animals in many ways, and your paper should seek to connect how people consume animals and examine whether it is a positive or negative relationship. In order to achieve this, you will first need to define the animal and the parameters by which you will discuss it, and then argue whether the relationship between humans and this animal is valuable, well intentioned, or possibly a horrific holocaust. For this research essay, you will select an animal (All animals are food) and research the following aspects: 1) How this animal was treated in the pre-industrial era (Primal State / Less Human Interaction State). 2) How this animal is treated in the modern era of agribusiness (Controlled by Humans). 3) How this animal is being treated on small farms and local producers or by specie “saviors” (Alternative Human Perspectives). Please note that your investigation into these three aspects do not have to be the focal point of the paper, but instead, should be examined in order for you to provide a well reasoned argument. Your argument should be structured using Socratic, Toulmin, or Rogerian method. Your work should be formatted in MLA format. Your Works Cited Page should have a minimum of 12-14 sources listed on the Works Cited Page. Your essay should not be longer than TEN (10) Pages – No LESS than NINE (9) Pages. You will be graded on the following: Essay Structure Thesis Statement Topic Sentences / Transitions Incorporation of outside material Proper Grammar Essay 2 Turn In – Draft OK – Should be page length required to cover the “Definition” portion of the assignment. Essay 3 Turn in – Complete Draft – Finished to length and including argument about animal. For Revision Portfolio – You can use the entire assignment as your whole revision – or a portion of it. Writers’ Response (50 points): This response paper should consider what you did outside of your own work to change and fix your paper. It can discuss in class peer review, Teacher conferences, or help from the Writing Center. Must be two full pages for full credit. Suggested Support Films: Food Inc.
