For an industry of your choice – in a country or region of your choice – identify and analyse what you feel are the
most important drivers and trends at play. Which companies are the rising stars, which are becoming dogs, which are cash cows – and why?
Use appropriate, theories and models covered in the lectures and seminars to explain your ideas.
Purpose of the Assessment
The purpose of the assignment is to assess your ability to identify key strategic issues
facing business and the implications of dynamic forces in and on that industry’s
development. Theoretical tools and models from the Module must be presented and
good, referenced insights from academic and industry sources must be provided.
Assessment Task
This assignment needs to be presented in the format of an essay. The precise style
and approach is up to you. Please make it as interesting as possible and as
effective in communicating your understanding of the requirements of the task as
possible (e.g. using diagrams, application of tools from the Module as well as text).
The word limit is 2500 words (plus or minus 10%).
Please include a title page including the full essay title, your name, and student
number.

This will help you to focus on the key areas you need to address. Use the module
materials to provide you with relevant theory and academic concepts to support your
discussion.
Advice #4: Although it will be important to use examples from companies in the
industry you have chosen – you must compare and contrast between them. You must
not write this assignment in the form of a description or history of just one business.

Marks will be awarded in the following areas:
1. The student articulates the strategic landscape of the industry effectively
showing appropriate use of theory to frame their answer
2. The student analyses both trends and drivers for that industry, drawing on
relevant examples throughout
3. The student evaluates key points made to draw sensible conclusions on the
most important aspects affecting the development of and dynamics in their
chosen industry
4. The student demonstrates a consistently high standard of academic writing;
knowledge of a range of quality sources, and uses Harvard referencing correctly
throughout
