subject: drinking coffee Each student will consider an aspect of his/her behavior that he/she would like to change. Students will assess the “problem” and develop an intervention plan to assist in reaching his or her goals. Students will develop single-subject design research projects to evaluate the impact of his or her intervention. Write-ups from the projects should describe the following: The problem The goals/desired outcomes in measurable terms (dependent variable) The intervention (independent variable) The operational definition of each variable Baseline phase Intervention phase Interpretation of the results Overall evaluation and next steps based on the outcomes of the single-subject design. Further instructions to complete this ‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍ project will be provided. The write-up should be approximately 8-10- pages (not including cover page, graph, or reference page). A-introduction My name is salwa louca; I am the participant in the single subject design. I am fifty- five years old whit female. I am happily mom married from Egyptian man, I have two kids: a twenty-nine years old grail and twenty-four years old boy. I was born in EGYPT, where I received education as a lawyer and I worked in EGYPTION STATE COUNCIL, then I immigrated to the United State of America. I Got my Second Bachelor’s degree of science- Business management 2016 and I started my Master Of Social worker in Touro school. I have been working as paraprofessional in Public School 205 clarion over 14 years un ‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍ til now

The purpose of this assignment is to help you get familiar with the single subject design method and build confidence in your ability to use this type of assessment in your social work practice.

What To Do:

  1. You will be evaluating yourself in some manner for this project. The person cannot be anyone but you and it cannot be someone that you come into contact with in your field placement or job.

  1. Choose ONE target behavior/feeling/thought that you will attempt to change.

  1. Define target behavior/feeling/thought that you are going to attempt to change in measurable terms by creating at least 2 operationalized indicators using frequency, magnitude or duration related to the target behavior/feeling/thought. REMEMBER, YOUR OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS MUST BE SPECIFIC ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN MEASURE THEM. YOU NEED TO CREATE AN OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF THE TARGET BEHAVIOR/FEELING/THOUGHT THAT CAN BE MEASURED DAILY.  You should select a behavior/feeling/thought that has the potential to have a wide range of occurrences, not just if it happens or not, yes/no.

  1. Create a baseline graph (“A-phase”) for each indicator (frequency, magnitude, or duration) that measures your target behavior/feeling/thought (minimum 7 points). Graph each indicator on a separate graph.

  1. Implement an intervention that is aimed at changing your target behavior/feeling/thought. (minimum of 7 points).

  1. Update your graphs to include the intervention data (“B-phase”) that measures this target behavior/feeling/thought during the intervention phase.

  1. Label your graphs. (A, B and a | to indicate when the intervention occurs.)

  1. Describe the visual, statistical, and clinical results.

  1. Write up your experience as outlined on the next page.

What To Write:

Background (worth 5 points)—Suggested length: 1/2 page

  1. Briefly describe your participant (demographics) and his/her system (strengths and challenges).  Describe, in general terms, the current challenge that this single subject design is focused on improving (what change you are seeking and why?)

Methods (worth 25 points)— Suggested length: 1-2 pages

  1. Describe the target behavior/feeling/thought that you are seeking to change. Justify why you chose this target behavior/feeling/thought.

  1. Describe how you operationalized this target behavior/feeling/thought for 2 indicators (frequency, magnitude and duration). MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE VERY SPECIFIC AND MEASURSABLE. Justify why you operationalized these behavior/feeling/symptoms in this manner.

  1. Describe your intervention.  What was your step-by-step intervention plan?  Describe any challenges you encountered (e.g., difficulties sticking to the intervention plan, frustration, self-consciousness, reactivity). Describe any positive experiences related to the intervention that occurred while doing the intervention plan.

Findings (worth 20 points)— Suggested length: 2-3 pages

  1. Include 2 graphs using 2 different indicators (frequency, magnitude or duration) showing the data that you collected from baseline to intervention for your target behavior/feeling/thought. You can either use Excel to create the 2 graphs or create them by hand on graph paper. There is graph paper that you can print out on Blackboard.
  2. Label each graph with the following: graph title, X axis label (horizontal), Y axis label (vertical), “A” label, “B” label and “|” (to indicate when the intervention took place)
  3. Describe if you reached visual and clinical significance for each graph. Be sure to define what you determined to be clinical significance FIRST before you explain if you achieved it or not.
  4. Also describe if you reached statistical significance for each graph. Be sure to label each graph with the baseline mean and +2SD/-2SD as described in class.

Discussion (worth 30 points)— Suggested length: 2 pages

  1. Summarize your findings. Did you reach the same conclusion (i.e., the intervention was effective vs. not effective) with the 3 types of significances for both graphs?  If yes, why?  If no, why? What does that means for you ability to determine how effective your intervention was?

  1. What were the strengths and weaknesses of your project in terms of research design (AB), intervention, and data collection methods? Why? Were there any reliability or validity/reactivity problems? Please describe.

  1. Would you say your intervention was successful or not? Why or why not?

Conclusion (worth 10 point)— Suggested length: One page or less

  1. What was your overall evaluation of this experience? Did you like the experience? Do you think it was an effective way to make a change in your life? What were the benefits and burdens of using this type of intervention for you? Now that you have explored using this type of research design, what are your thoughts on its applicability to social work practice?

Quality and Clarity of Writing (worth 10 points)

  1. Please proofread your paper before you submit it. Use proper grammar and create a paper that is well-

formatted.

Appendix (required for submission):

  1. Include an appendix that lists the exact numerical value for each data set point for each graph. Identify the start of the intervention.  Record the Baseline Mean, Standard Deviation (SD), SD x 2, Mean + 2SD, mean – 2SD and the Intervention Phase Mean.  You need this information to include in your findings section and help with the interpretation of your statistical significance results. I need this information to make sure that you interpreted your statistical significance correctly.  Remember, you can get the Baseline Mean and SD from: http://www.easycalculation.com/statistics/standard-deviation.php.
