Option A: Your Future Vision

In this course, we studied seven possible future visions that speculate what the global situation will be in one hundred years. Now you will have a chance to develop your own vision of the future. Write a three-page (900-word) essay in which you explain what you think the global situation will be in the next century. You may borrow from some or all of the visions discussed in this course, as well as add your own ideas. Your vision may be optimistic or pessimistic, depending on what you believe will happen.

You are NOT required to use any sources other than your textbook and syllabus for this project, but you must cite all direct quotations in American Political Science Association Style. (Guides to the American Political Science Association Style Manual are available online and in most libraries.) Include a bibliography at the end of your paper, noting any additional sources you might have used. You need to include the bibliography even if you only use your textbook (list it as a source).

The project will be worth 100 points, and it will be worth 17 percent of your course grade. In grading your project, your teacher will focus on your understanding of global issues today. Your predictions should follow logically from current conditions. In grading your project, your teacher will look for:

· Discussion of sovereign states (who are the great powers, is balance of power an issue, how important are sovereign states in international relations, etc.) (15 points possible)

· Discussion of non-state actors (who they will be, the impact they will have, etc.) (15 points possible)

· Discussion of supranational and transnational organizations (what kinds of international organizations will develop or form, and what states will they involve? What role will they play?) (15 points possible)

· Discussion of war (it is more or less frequent, how is peace kept, etc.) (15 points possible)

· Discussion of political economy (What will happen with globalization, what will be the major trade relationships, etc.) (15 points possible)

· Discussion of how global environmental and disease issues have been resolved (15 points possible)

· Correct use of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and citations (10 points possible)

Option B: Presentation

For this project, imagine you are a newscaster, and that you are reporting on an important matter relating to international economics. Choose a current event that affects the economies of at least two states (countries). Do some research on the matter—what is its historic background, and what issues does it involve? You must use at least three sources (online sources are fine as long as they are scholarly).

Give a presentation in which you explain the event from a realist, liberal, or neo-Marxist perspective. Keep in mind that realists emphasize the efforts of individual states to amass wealth, and that they view a gain for one state as a loss for others. Liberals stress cooperation, believing that more than one state can benefit from economic relationships, and that gains are not mutually exclusive. Neo-Marxists view economic relationships as exploitation of small countries by large ones.

Your presentation should be between four and six minutes. It will be worth 100 points and count for 17 percent of your course grade. In your report, you should:

· Explain the historic background of the event. (15 points possible)

· Summarize the effects and impact of the event. (15 points possible)

· Describe the event in realist, liberal, or neo-Marxist terms. (15 points possible)

· Offer an opinion of whether the event is positive or negative (from the point of view you are using) (15 points possible)

· Use at least three scholarly online sources in your research. (15 points possible)

· Use at least two visual aids (maps, charts, etc.) in your report. (15 points possible)

· Demonstrate proper use of mechanics. (10 points possible)

To submit Option B, record your presentation in one of the following formats:

· avi

· wmv

· mov

· mp4

You may record your presentation as many times as you like. Be sure the video quality clearly captures everything you use in your presentation, including your gestures, expressions, and visual aids. Record your image from the waist up. Make sure your voice is clearly audible. Save the file on your desktop, using your first initial, last name, project number, and course string in the name of the file.

· Open the DropBox by clicking the mailbox image on the right side of your screen (the cardboard box).

· Click “Browse” to select your file. (A new “Browse” button will appear after you have selected your file. Disregard it. This feature of the DropBox is for projects in which students need to submit more than one file.)

· Click “Begin Upload.”

· Wait until a message appears on your screen saying “Your Upload is Complete.” This message will provide a URL to your file so it can be viewed online. If you experience difficulty or long delays in uploading, you may need to compress your video file. A recommended freeware program for compression is http://www.zamzar.com/.

· Copy the URL and paste it into the appropriate place in the Presentation Preface Page at the end of your project assignment document (scroll down). You only need to paste the URL itself. Do not copy any other information from the DropBox upload page. Be sure to copy your URL before you close the DropBox upload page!
