Students seeking tutor feedback on their essay preparation must 1) complete this formative assignment, and 2) engage in the self-assessment component before making an appointment to see tutors during office hours. Tutors will be happy to have you talk them through their essay outlines and will give you verbal feedback on your work, but they will not be able to read through essay drafts or provide written feedback – so please do not email them your essay and ask them to comment.

Deadline: Learning Week 12 (week commencing January 8, 2018). Bring a hard copy to your seminar tutor or module tutor during office hours, ready to discuss.

Requirements: Write a brief introduction and conclusion to the essay question, and list the main points to be made in support of your arguments (as indicated on the assignment). Provide a list of key sources to be used in writing your essay.

Hints and tips:

Things to think about…

What is the crux of the question – what is it asking you to know? What are the key terms and issues raised by the question?

What is your argument/position in relation to the question posed?

What are the key points that you need to make to support your argument?

What are the relevant theories that you can draw upon? How do they help you in addressing the issues raised by the question?

What is the relevant empirical evidence? How can you use it to substantiate the argument you are making?

How are you going to structure your answer? When making a point, is it clear to the reader that what you are saying is relevant to answering the question?

In addition to the main and recommended readings, use the Library website and Google Scholar to search for additional sources that may be useful in formulating or justifying your argument. Think carefully about credible sources of information and focus on research-oriented articles or chapters, with occasional real-world examples if needed to illustrate a point. Try to minimise your use of websites.
