Although many breakups occur during the first few years of marriage, with the peak occurring about 3 years after marriage, over 40 percent of all broken marriages have lasted 10 or more years. The median duration of a first marriage at the time of divorce is 8 years for both men and women. Second marriages ending in divorce average 8.5 years for men and 8 years for women. The average age of men at time of first divorce is 32 years and for women, 30 years (Kreider and Ellis 2011). Among all married couples in 2009, 79 percent were in their first marriage, 17 percent were in their second marriage, and 4 percent had been married three times or more.
