For this paper, you will write a pointed, clear, hypothetical policy brief as though you were preparing it for either the mayor of Philadelphia or the leader of an appropriate local organization arguing in favor of the intervention you have chosen. Utilize the sample policy brief as a guide AND that your policy brief adheres to the following required format: ? Title ? Executive Summary o Identify your social problem. o Make sure to identify the more specific problem or “sub-problem” that YOUR policy intervention will be addressing directly as a way of solving the bigger problem. • For example: In the sample policy brief (“Seeing Spots”), the social problem was acne among teens and the more specific problem was access to dermatologic care among teens. In the body of the brief, the author then proposed a policy intervention that would address this sub-problem directly. In the body of the brief, the author also pointed out how other interventions (i.e. Policy Alternatives) DID NOT address the sub-problem of access. o State that the brief is making a specific recommendation that will address this sub-problem. ? Context and Scope of Problem o Make a case as to the severity of your selected social problem. Use statistics. o Get into the specific effects of your selected social problem. o Discuss the more specific problem(sub-problem) that you identified in your Executive Summary. Again, this sub-problem is the one that your recommended policy intervention is going to directly address (you will talk about this in the next section). ? A Call to Action o Please follow the format provided in the sample policy brief (“Seeing Spots”). • Briefly reiterate WHY your broader social problem IS a problem. • Briefly reiterate that solving the particular sub-problem you have identified is critically important to addressing the broader social problem. Mention that officials have undertaken 1 policy initiative to address your social problem. This policy initiative is the less promising policy that you researched for your Policy Intervention Research Paper. Note: Unlike the sample policy brief, you will state that officials have undertaken 1 policy initiative (not 2). • Point out (in your own words) that while this policy initiative is a good first step, more needs to be done. • Then, recommend the policy that you found to be most promising in your Policy Intervention Research Paper (provide the specific name of the policy). This policy MUST address the sub-problem that you identified your Executive Summary at the beginning of the brief. • Include a bullet-pointed list of clear steps for implementing this policy. • End the brief with a sentence that emphasizes the improvements that implementing these steps will bring about. • Consulted or Recommended Sources.
