Task details

(LO1) and shows how the themes depicted relate to a current issue in society (LO2).

*** I choose ‘Cinderella’ to be my media focus in this essay. Also, I need to choose at least 3 articles from UNCRC which must be relevant to Cinderella. I have already chosen 5 articles. (But! If you think some of them are not really relevant to the story of Cinderella, don’t use them then. Just don’t use less than 3 articles. Thank you.) I chose Article 1, 6, 19, 27, 31 (I think Article 1 can be used for LO1). ***

Introduction. (200 words approx.)

There has been a significant shift in the thinking about rights and participation of young people in recent years. This essay will start by outlining the origins and development of human rights regarding children and young people. You may want to state that you will be providing a discussion on the UNCRC which has been fundamental in the movement of Children’s Rights. (LO1)

Fundamental to this essay is the drawing on a media source which will allow me to explore a current issue related to the rights of children. (LO2) The focus will be….

This essay will provide a debate/argument which assesses how the themes of my media source can be seen to ‘play out’ in whatever your chosen area is. You may wish to look at voice, issues of power and powerlessness, constructions of childhood and how they impact on how children are seen (as an example)

In the main you will be discussing how ideas in policy guidelines relates to your media focus and in turn relates to real examples (LO1 and 2)

Main Body (1600 approx)

Origins – UNCRC and possibly other policy/s. So for example if you chose Tracey Beaker as a focus you may wish to look at policies related to the rights of Children in Care. Elaborate on the discussion in the introduction to demonstrate a more comprehensive understanding of LO1.

You could introduce your media focus here. Explain the book/film/image/poem/lyrics – brief summary so the reader knows the key ideas.

You should now be analysing the media source alongside some of the theories. You may also use other authors analysis of your chosen media source – such as Anne Mc Gillivrays interpretation of ‘Horton Hears a Who’.

Alongside this analysis you should be thinking about how these ideas play out in reality. So for an example you could look at the notion of Cinderella (the book), ‘Cinderella’s law’ (the political discussion) and neglect of children and young people in the UK (real example) which will allow you to address the central question and learning outcomes explicitly.

You can also discuss these ideas through central themes. So if my focus was on Dahls ‘Matilda’ I would almost certainly be looking at power and powerlessness and the notion of advocacy with Miss Honey who gave Matilda a voice.
