These two articles from the British National Archives describe the Luddite movement from the early 19th century and the risks to workers in the late 19th century, in this case phosphorous poisoning. Read articles and click on the primary documents on the right side of the screen. Some of these are handwritten, but there are transcripts. Keep in mind that some of the documents have multiple pages. Read them all.
