Utopian communities have been formed throughout the history of the United States. Often they have been situated on a farm, and every member contributed to the work of raising food for the community. In most cases, gender roles blurred so that both men and women worked in the fi elds and both cooked, cleaned, and engaged in child care. What effect do you think this kind of arrangement might have on the children, especially as they grow up to establish families of their own?
