JE9 Journal

What are you learning about your research topic that is surprising to you?

Strengths.

As a reader, I have the capability of grasping a lot of the content of the subject easily without having to refer to previous works every time that I come across a new concept in the same subject. As a writer, I have the ability to express my ideas in paper fluently and in a way that is easy to understand.

Weaknesses.

As a reader, I often find myself missing out on particular concepts which may have been crucial to the subject’s contents as I tend to skim fast through paragraphs. I often find myself making silly grammar mistakes through improper use of articles, comas, and adjectives. Nonetheless, I am trying to minimize on these problems.

The most surprising thing that i have learned researching my topic so far is the fact that low-income communities around the world will suffer the most due to climate change, although they contribute very little to cause it in the first place. Rich communities and countries around the world take the blame for most of the greenhouse gas emissions that is responsible for global climate change. In the years to come however, people with lower socioeconomic status and poor countries will suffer the most due to climate change.  This is further exacerbated by the fact that such communities and countries will not be able to do much to mitigate and adapt with the challenges that climate change brings because of their inability to pay for climate related projects.

What I have learned

COLLAPSE

Top of Form

My research topic is the effect of animal agriculture on climate change. There is lots of interesting information about the topic, but the most interesting is how large a contributor our reliance on red meat is to excess greenhouse gases. Though the burning of fossil fuels is the largest contributor, animal agriculture is responsible for about 15% of greenhouse gases in the world. The largest problem is the production of beef. Raising cattle takes huge amounts of land, fertilizer, and water– much more so than raising any other animal. Cattle also produce large amounts of methane through digestion. It’s estimated that eating any amount of red meat causes five times the amount of greenhouse gas emissions compared to an equal amount of poultry. This comes from deforestation to create land to grow crops to feed the animals, energy burned in doing so, manure management, soil fertilization, and more. It is surprising to learn how and why raising cattle causes such larger emissions compared to other animals. It’s interesting to see how my personal habits can directly contribute to excessive greenhouse gas emission. Although there are other habits that I could cut out that are generate more emissions, my own meat consumption is something for me to think about, not only for health reasons, but also for our environment.
