Aims:
- To demonstrate that you have a good awareness of the language features in the texts;
- To demonstrate that you are able to select interesting and appropriate texts for your Learners and that you have good ideas for using these texts in the classroom.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Choose two authentic written texts that you would like to use in the classroom with one specific group of learners. Two texts should be from a real life, not from any grammar or course book. Texts can be a fable, recipe, advertisement, from newspaper, journal, diary.
- Each authentic text should be of 500 words. (it does not come in 3000 words)
- Assignment is consisted of two parts, Part A and Part B
- Each part is consisted of 1500 words, which means whole assignments is of 3000 words, without references and appendices
- Give your assignment a suitable title. Use suitable subheadings.
- APA style should be followed
- Give references and “texts”, “ activities” references in brackets while incorporating with academic literature, for example (see Appendix 1), (see line 1, text 1), (see activity 1) etc
- Only references of last 5 years. No references of more than last 5 years.
PART A: Text analysis
To show you have a good awareness of the language features in the texts:
- Identify the genre, field, mode and tenor features of each text.
- Provide a detailed analysis, comparison and contrast of each text in terms of one of the following aspects of grammar:
- modality
- cohesion
- vocabulary: lexical relations
- show the comparison and analysis of texts with help of table.
- Genre has to be same of both the texts, but field, mode and tenor can be different.
- word count of part A should be 1500 words.
PART B: Teaching
Show you are able to select interesting and appropriate texts for your learners, and that you have good ideas for using these texts in the classroom.
- Briefly describe ONE group of learners for the two texts. Their level, age, time duration of the class. It should be atleast of 1:30 hour.
- Explain why each text is interesting for this group of learners and describe the purpose for which you would use each text with your learners.
- Describe very specifically how you would use each text in the classroom to teach your target learners.
- explain how and why you will teach your lesson plan, by which teaching method, for example Task based Teaching method, PPP etc, with references of theories, research etc.
- incorporate teaching with all four skills, i.e, reading, speaking, listening and writing.
- there should be four activities , which involves four above mentioned skill. Each activity involving one particular skill. Integarate theories in your activities.
- do not write lesson plan, write and attach in Appendix.
- attach all four activities, lesson plan and both texts in Appendix.
- word count of part B should be 1500 words.
Note: Make sure you refer to academic literature in both Part A (Text Analysis) and Part B (Teaching) to frame your discussion.
Assessment criteria:
This assignment will be assessed on the following criteria. You should consider each of these when writing your assignments.
Theoretical understanding: Does the assignment show that you understand the theoretical principles related to grammar teaching? Does it show that you have good language awareness?
Use of information: Does the assignment show that you have done some relevant reading and that you understand what you have read? Is what you have read appropriately integrated into the assignment (i.e., do you use it to support what you are saying, and do you acknowledge sources appropriately?)
Application to teaching: Are the things you saying about using the texts in the classroom clear and are they appropriate for the group of learners you have chosen?
Presentation: Is the assignment well-organized and laid out? Are the appendices and tables clearly labelled and can the reader easily follow which appendix, table or feature you are talking about? Is the reference list presented correctly? Is the text written clearly, logically and in correct English?
Give your assignment a suitable title. Use suitable subheadings.
Ensure your References, and Appendices, start on a new page.
Print on single side of paper, 12 point font, double line spacing.
