Use of power: read the following 12 statements and indicate for each one of these to which of the four forms of use of power (see paragraph 6.3) it applies: A boss tries to persuade a subordinate to do something by: 1 holding out the prospect of a personal favour 2 pointing out the rules 3 indicating that it has been agreed in the planning process 4 saying that it has to happen and tolerating no contradiction 5 indicating that nobody else can do it as well 6 emphasising the utility of the desired task 7 having a friendly chat 8 indicating how important good collaboration is 9 laying out the problem and asking how the person would resolve it 10 emphasising that a good assessment is important to the subordinate’s future 11 indicating that a more senior boss will be informed if he does not do it 12 explaining what the problem is and indicating that there is only one solution.
