Check the experience of the filmed TV moment, finding words to express their intuitions and understanding. This is done to appreciate the themes, concerns, achievements and failings of the programme, through a consideration of its stylistic relationships and arrangements.
Details of the exercise:
Choose a short sequence from Black Mirror (TV Series). The sequence may be only a few shots, or it may be a scene, or it may cross two scenes; it may be one minute or three minutes 10 seconds. The length and place of the sequence will be your decision but your study should show the reasons for the choice. Bear in mind that you must analyse your sequence in detail so anything longer than three or four minutes will make things difficult for you.
You may choose to discuss many stylistic elements or concentrate on one or two. For example, you may discuss the arrangements of the shots, position and gesture of the performers, camera movement, setting, decor, costume, sound, music, or lighting. Do not merely point something out: writing that ‘the programme cuts’ or ‘the camera moves left’ is not adequate. You must explain the significance of these features and the way they relate to each other.
