Case Study, Chapter 6, Abigail Hanson: Leukemia Note: The case study presented here is a supplemental case to this chapter and features different individual(s). Tiffany Brown is a 4-year-old patient who was admitted to the pediatric oncology unit this morning. Tiffany was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after receiving an outpatient bone marrow biopsy yesterday. She usually lives at home with her mother, Lori, and her 2-year-old little brother, Timothy. Lori is a single mother who usually works two jobs to support the family. The nurse begins Tiffany's admission assessment while Lori sits in the corner and silently cries. Tiffany appears anxious and states, “Will this hurt? I've never been in a hospital before.” (Learning Objectives: 4, 5) 1. Describe the nursing interventions that the nurse can implement to ensure hospitalization does not hinder Tiffany's normal growth and development. What other interventions will help Tiffany to be less anxious? 2. Describe the response that hospitalization will have on Tiffany's family. What might the nurse do to assist Lori in coping with the hospitalization? 3. Who are some of the multidisciplinary team members the nurse can consult to help with this situation?
