Task Overview Identify a contemporary/cutting edge engineering issue or product of interest to you. If you choose to research a product, you must delve into the issues or problems that created the need for the product.
Research this topic by reading a minimum of three articles, at least one of which should have been published within the past three months.
Write a 2 ½ to 3 page report (not including references) in the form of a memo that describes the issue or product and how it might affect the future of engineering.
Include a properly formatted memo header. Use single‐spacing, 1 to 1.25” margins, bolded headers, an appropriate font, and distinct paragraph divisions.
Bring 2 copies of your draft memo to class on the date specified on the syllabus for in‐class peer review. Also, note any areas where you are struggling so your reviewers can offer specific suggestions Purpose and Audience The purpose of this assignment is to help you explore your field of study, improve your writing skills, and prepare you for the writing you will do in the workplace. Additionally, these issues could be analyzed further in upcoming assignments: the sustainability poster, the ethics presentation, and/or the team research report. The audience for your memo is your peers and instructor in HCDE 231. Consider carefully what this audience knows about your topic, and tailor your content to them (e.g., explain technical terms and or processes that someone outside your field might not be familiar with). Draft your memoFormat your document as a memo
Submit your memo for peer reviewRevise your memo based on peer feedback. Content Outline Introduction – Introduce the issue or product you will discuss. Clearly state the report’s purpose, a bit of background information on the issue/product (e.g., why your audience should care about this issue), and provide an overview sentence or two at the end of the introduction that names the topics that the rest of the report will discuss. Background – Provide the relevant background information on the issue/problem or product necessary to set the stage for your detailed discussion of the facts. Discussion – Provide a detailed account of the issue, including current solutions or proposed solutions, or a detailed description of the product on which you are reporting. Be sure to clearly separate the facts from your opinion or others’ opinions. Define technical terms that the audience will need to know to follow the discussion. Future Implications – In 1 to 2 paragraphs, describe the implications of the issue or product for the future of engineering. Such implications could include how engineers can contribute to solving the problem or making product innovations, how the issue or product might influence the job market or training for engineers, what kinds of new problems or issues may develop in the future, or aspects of the product’s design or development that remain to be optimized. Conclusion – Briefly summarize the issue or product you have discussed in the memo, recapping the main ideas you raised in the body and providing closure. References – Provide full bibliographic information for the articles you have used. Follow either APA or IEEE style (see the course Web site for links to these style guides).
