Role-play a child care center staff meeting and discuss one agenda item, “Timing for weekly staff meetings.” The director has decided that the entire staff (including the cook, the janitor, and the secretary) must meet every week. The question open for discussion is the day of the week on which the staff should meet, and when and how long the meetings should be. Assign the following roles to class members:
a. Director: works Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
b. Teacher A: works Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
c. Teacher B: works Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
d. Assistant teacher C: works Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
e. Assistant teacher D: works Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
f. Part-time teacher E: works Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
g. Cook: works Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
h. Janitor: works Monday through Friday 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are 35 children in the program who arrive on a staggered schedule between 6:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and leave between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The children occupy two classrooms and two sleeping rooms. Sleeping rooms are adjacent to one another and to the outdoor area. The staff meeting discussion is to be led by the director, and the group is to come to some decision about when the regular staff meeting will be held. Use the blackboard or newsprint for note taking, if you need it. Practice good listening skills; make sure that everyone participates.
