oo The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013) Mira Nair

o American Sniper – Autobiography of Chris Kyle – Chris Kyle
o American Sniper (2014) Clint Eastwood
Please make sure to read the attached GUIDELINES for clear instructions and will be attaching as well a useful document discussing ELEMENTS OF FILM to refer to when needed.

• Write a thesis-driven essay discussing one set of texts as an adaptation.
• Structure: Introduction/Thesis, Body paragraphs that include evidence from each text, Conclusion
• To support your claims:
o Use least four quotations from the literary piece and several quickly described scenes from the film to illustrate your ideas. When you use the quotations and describe scenes, you need to explain why that quotation/scene is important and not expect them to speak for themselves.
o When discussing filmmaking elements, describe each element in detail and what meaning it makes for you to support your answer.
It’ up to you to choose 1 most comfortable set of movie/text between the 3.( DO NOT WRITE ABOUT THE 3 SETS ONLY pick 1)
Resources or reference are: LITERATURE and FILMS
LITERATURE: Discuss two or three different “Elements of Literature” in your piece such as plot, character, setting, point of view, style, tone, social and historical context and their relation the message or theme. Use at least four quotations to illustrate your points. After you use a quotation, discuss why it is important and what it contributes to the piece (the quotations don’t necessarily “speak for themselves”; you need to make the connections to theme).

FILM: Then move to the film version: briefly summarize any significant changes made to social and historical context, plot, character, setting, ending and discuss how these changes change the overall meaning for the film audience. Zero in on two or three elements that you might have the most to say about, such as a pair of matching characters, narrative style, plot changes, additions/deletions, relationships between and among characters. Summarize key scenes in the film to support your ideas. Include two or three elements of filmmaking (camera distance and movement, lighting and shadow, color, editing, acting, costume, props, sound, etc.) to buttress your answer.
