An informative speech is objective, provides facts, and relies on providing information and not persuasion. For your informative speech, inform your peers about a law (it can be a bill, legislation, Act, etc.) from 2020 that is directly relevant to them. You should review your notes on topics that interest you, are meaningful to you, and interesting for your peers so that you may pick a law that your peers should care about. The speech must be informative and include at least 4 sources of information listed on your speech outline. Your speech should not include more than 2 main body points (body paragraphs). The speech outline should include an introduction, the two main body paragraphs, transitions, and a conclusion.

Provide a typed outline that follows the format of the sample outline provided below. Refer to the sample informative speech outline (below) as a template to write your informative speech. Include all of the parts for a speech that are used in the sample speech outline. This speech should demonstrate good organizational skills and audience adaptation skills. Do not type up the speech as a paper – use an outline.

Presentation: I will be assessing your delivery during the speech via a videotaped speech. Please refer to the grade sheet (below) to see what I will be assessing, including voice, eye contact, posture, etc.

You must use 4 sources for this speech. No visual aids are required. The outline should include full sentences, APA in-text citations, a References page, and appropriate grammar. Double space your outline. Be prepared to give a 4 1/2 minute speech.

Title: Overcoming Insomnia

General Purpose: To provide new information

Specific Purpose: To inform listeners of how to overcome insomnia

Thesis statement: Students can overcome insomnia by taking a few simple steps.

Introduction

I. Attention Material/Clincher: What is insomnia? Insomnia is the condition of being unable to sleep. People with insomnia, may be plagued by trouble falling asleep, unwelcome awakenings during the night, and fitful sleep (Winter, 2012). Insomnia is one of the most common types of sleep disturbance, at least occasionally affecting about one in three people.

II. Tie to the Audience: As you are listening to me, I know that not everyone suffers from insomnia. But still, there is a time when you cannot really close your eyes and you wonder what is stopping you from getting your nice and comfy sleep. Therefore, I dare to say that you may be experiencing the same problem of those who are suffering from insomnia.

III. Credibility statement: After reviewing dozens of studies from experts on insomnia, I realized that there are practical steps that help insomniacs.

IV. Thesis statement: Today I will argue that students can overcome insomnia by taking a few simple steps.

V. Preview: Insomnia, which is due to various causes and includes a variety of symptoms, can be reduced or eliminated in a number of ways. Therefore, I will inform you on how to overcome insomnia.

A. Firstly, I will tell you to take look at your daily habits which disturb your sleep.

B. Secondly, I will inform you how to overcome insomnia by creatively adopting new habits.

[Transition: So how can you overcome insomnia?]

Body

I. First and foremost, to overcome insomnia, try to look at your daily habits which disrupt your sleep. Some of the things you are doing as daily habits may actually make the problem worse.

A. If you’re using sleeping pills to fall asleep, this will disrupt your sleep even more over the long-term.

1. In addition, taking sleeping pills are really not good for your health (Boose, Robinson, Saisan, Segal, & Smith, 2013).

2. Even though it may take a few days for your body to get used to the change, but once you do, you will sleep better.

B. Reducing ones caffeine intake is also compulsory.

1. Often insomniacs are very sensitive to this stimulant and thus may be unable to sleep after only one cup of soda or coffee in the afternoon (Boose, Robinson, Saisan, Segal, & Smith, 2013).

2. Therefore, if one has a problem of falling asleep, just try to sleep without caffeine completely or at least stop drinking caffeinated drinks at least eight hours before bed (Winter, 2012).

C. Plus, limiting alcohol is necessary because alcohol can make you feel sleepy and it interferes with the quality of your sleep. You may drink a glass of warm milk to replace the alcohol.

D. The next prevention is getting rid of cigarette.

1. Nicotine, a drug contained in cigarette smoke can affect one’s ability to sleep. Studies show cigarettes raise blood pressure, speed up the heart rate, and stimulates brainwave activity (Houser, n.d.).

2. Sleep often improves dramatically in smokers who quit (Boose, Robinson, Saisan, Segal, & Smith, 2013).

E. Other than that, the main thing to be focused now is to hold yourselves from taking naps during the day because napping during the day can make you more difficult to sleep at night.

[Transition: When you have tried to avoid yourself from doing those habits, you may find sleeping time is the best time you ever had.]

II. Secondly, another way to help you sleep is by adopting new habits. Being creative even in your sleep is needed so that you can have a quality sleep.

A. The easiest thing to do is by keeping your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool.

1. Noise, light, and heat can interfere with sleep.

2. Therefore, try using a sound machine or earplugs to hide outside noise, an open window or fan to keep the room cool, and blackout curtains or a sleep mask to block out light (Houser, n.d.).

B. Next, sticking to a regular sleep schedule helps to support your biological clock by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, including weekends.

1. Getting up at your usual time in the morning even if you are tired is a must.

2. This will help you get back in a regular sleep rhythm (Boose, Robinson, Saisan, Segal, & Smith, 2013).

C. Plus, having a short reading before going to sleep is better. Besides increasing your knowledge, reading materials including newspapers, magazines, and encyclopedias and so on can guarantee you a nice sleep (Winter, 2012).

D. You may also choose to do some light activities such as watching television and playing video games.

1. Avoid stimulating activity and stressful situations before bedtime. This includes 2. vigorous exercise, big discussions or arguments.

[Transition to conclusion: Hence, there are so many things to be done to relax your mind so that your brain is really in a prepared condition to sleep.]

Conclusion

I. Final review: All in all, there are two important things to do to overcome insomnia.

A. Firstly, look at your daily habits which distract your sleep.

B. Secondly, be creative by adopting new habits to help you sleep.

II. Tie back to the audience: There are actually many other treatments to cure insomnia.

A. However, the treatments that I have just informed are the simplest ways to overcome it.

B. Nevertheless, you do not have to seek for professional insomnia treatments as you can overcome your insomnia by yourselves just by following the tips given.

C. If you started to have the insomnia symptoms, you better hurry to overcome it so that it would not turn into a tragic one.

III. Concluding remarks/final clincher: God will never change one’s fate if he himself does not try to make a change. Therefore, if you are so tired of suffering insomnia, you can make a difference if you are very determined and put all your efforts to it. You must always expect for the best and be prepared for the worst.
