An annotated bibliography is a list of references, in which each citation is followed by a brief paragraph. The paragraph summarizes and critically evaluates the source – a book, article, website, report, etc.

The list of references (bibliography) and accompanying paragraphs (annotations) inform readers about the best research available on a specific topic or theme.

Each annotation is generally about 150 words, or 5-7 sentences, and should:

▪     summarize and analyze content and conclusions

▪     evaluate the relevancy, accuracy, and quality of a source

Citations are formatted in a specific style, such as APA

The number of annotations depends on the scope of your project; ask your instructor for specific details, including what citation style to use.

For this assignment, you must use the University of Victoria Library electronic databases to locate journal articles, books, book chapters related to your topic and Addiction in the Society. (https://www.uvic.ca/library/)

Please do not use any other library or any internet search engines (such as Google) to collect material.

Instruction FOR PART ONE

1. Write a Proposal for your essay in about 1-2 pages with a description of their topic for the major essay, including a preliminary thesis statement and description of the critical perspective offered
2. An Annotated Bibliography with a minimum of 10 peer reviewed reference required to support your essay. The Annotated Bibliography should include at least 10 such articles and include a brief (150-200 words) summary of the source as well as a description of why the sources is useful or relevant to your own research.

Part Two

Length– no fewer than 12 and no greater than 15 pages, excluding title page, references and appendices.   Please use 12 point font, 1 inch margins, double space, and include a separate title page with your student #.

This assignment is a formal academic essay on any topic of your choice as long as it has some relevance to the basic objectives of this course( Please the course Description and course objective is listed below). The essay assignment will allow you to expand your knowledge about a specific aspect of addictions/addictive processes within the context of critical social work practice.  The essay may be on any topic related to the objectives of the course. ( Please read the course description and course objective to give you a better understanding of this course and the topic to pick for this work)

In order to assist students in preparing a well-written and engaging paper, this assignment is broken down into 3 components.

A minimum of 10 peer reviewed references are required to support your essay.

The assignment is designed to enhance your ability to collect and critically reflect on recent literature on a particular topic, give you an opportunity to demonstrate your writing skills and highlight your ability to prepare a well-supported and thoughtful analysis.

You will be expected to locate and then critically examine the literature, demonstrate the ability to recognize relevant information, evaluate it, synthesize your impressions of the literature and integrate your understanding of this material into your essay.

The limitation on length means that you will need to do a thoughtful job of selecting, organizing, critiquing and synthesizing a large amount of scholarly material before you will be able to prepare a well-written academic essay.

Essay Format 

All essays must include the following:

1. A title page
2. An introductory section with a clear statement of what the essay proposes to explain, how the essay will be organized, and a detailed explanation of the critical perspective offered in the essay.
3. A clearly articulated analysis of the significance of the topic for social work practice.
4. Integration of material from the course text and other scholarly sources.
5. A professional writing style that includes organization within and across paragraphs (introductory topic sentence for each paragraph, transition statements between paragraphs, headings to organize the flow of ideas). Please use the spelling and grammar check functions of your word processing program before submitting all assignments! .
6. A conclusion that clearly summarizes how your own learning has been informed by completing the assignment and what steps you will take to continue your learning journey.

Course Description

This course critically examines the theoretical perspectives on practice, policy, and programs in the field of addictions and substance use. Addiction will be examined as a transactional process that takes place within larger socio-cultural contexts and students will be asked to examine and critically reflect on their own attitudes, values, and beliefs related to the course materials presented. This course places particular emphasis on the historical, social, geographic, and political contexts of addictions among women, youth, seniors, Indigenous peoples, and members of other marginalized social groups. We will examine issues in the regulation and control of substances and relevant trends in policy and program development. Students are expected to use critical reflection to articulate their own perspectives on addiction.

Course Objectives:

• be able to define addiction, understand its defining characteristics and to appreciate the impact and complexities of addiction on the individual and the community
• be able to discuss the context and prevalence of substance use and addiction in Canada
• be able to describe the complex interrelationships between addiction and various forms of disadvantage
• be able to explain the current structure of service delivery systems to those experiencing addition in relevant jurisdictions including the role of harm reduction in service delivery
• be able to identify a social work perspective on addiction and intervention
• be able to compare and contrast various approaches and theories on the causes and interventions for people involved in addiction/addictive processes
• be able to describe core concepts and the relevance of various model of change
• appreciate the complexity of the issues that arise in the area of child welfare, family violence, health, and criminal justice systems
