  1. Write a Proposal for your essay in about 1-2 pages with a description of their topic for the major essay, including a preliminary thesis statement and description of the critical perspective offered
  2. An Annotated Bibliography with a minimum of 10 peer reviewed reference required to support your essay. The Annotated Bibliography should include at least 10 such articles and include a brief (150-200 words) summary of the source as well as a description of why the sources is useful or relevant to your own research.

 

Part Two

Length– no fewer than 12 and no greater than 15 pages, excluding title page, references and appendices.   Please use 12 point font, 1 inch margins, double space, and include a separate title page with your student #.

Course Description

This course critically examines the theoretical perspectives on practice, policy, and programs in the field of addictions and substance use. Addiction will be examined as a transactional process that takes place within larger socio-cultural contexts and students will be asked to examine and critically reflect on their own attitudes, values, and beliefs related to the course materials presented. This course places particular emphasis on the historical, social, geographic, and political contexts of addictions among women, youth, seniors, Indigenous peoples, and members of other marginalized social groups. We will examine issues in the regulation and control of substances and relevant trends in policy and program development. Students are expected to use critical reflection to articulate their own perspectives on addiction.

  • be able to discuss the context and prevalence of substance use and addiction in Canada
  • be able to describe the complex interrelationships between addiction and various forms of disadvantage

  • be able to identify a social work perspective on addiction and intervention
  • be able to compare and contrast various approaches and theories on the causes and interventions for people involved in addiction/addictive processes
  • be able to describe core concepts and the relevance of various model of change
  • appreciate the complexity of the issues that arise in the area of child welfare, family violence, health, and criminal justice systems
