The objective is to learn an integrated facilities design case with several operational
control challenges. Applying layout concepts and tools you learned in IE 332, IE383, and
IE 386 will be helpful. The problem in this case is typical to problems you may be asked
to solve early in your career as an industrial engineer in a supply, manufacturing,
consulting, or service company. As a typical example, which is applicable also in other
integrated production systems design situations, we will focus here on a manufacturing
case.
The Indiana Seal Enterprise (ISE) represents many small to medium firms in the U.S. and
worldwide. The case is based on a real company, and it could have been located
anywhere in the world. You will design the layout of ISE at a new proposed site. (In the
future, we will also learn to audit and upgrade/expand existing production systems.)
There are also many opportunities for integrated facility layout and system revisions and
improvements in this same given site.
Thoroughly read and re-read this letter and the case document. Determine the material
flow and design the facility layout. You have to use CAD software* to develop, revise
and improve, then document and present your layout design alternatives. You have to
use statistical software, such as Minitab, to determine statistical uncertainties in your
design assumptions, analyze and present them in your report. It is necessary to elaborate
on the statistical risks of your recommended design, in comparison to the alternative
design(s) that you considered, but do not recommend.
In your report you will need to describe how you rationalize (understand, develop
logically, and explain) the design you recommend for the layout, including your
integrated design assumptions. You will need to present your layout with CAD
drawings, not hand-drawn.
In your report, you will also need to understand and discuss how the assigned problems
can help your integrated design concerns, specifically as related to this case.
Prepare your report following the detailed guidelines provided in the syllabus and in the
given Case 1 template. Pay attention also to the grading criteria highlighted for this case.
