Rationale: the case analysis essay builds on the preparatory research essay and the preparation and
engagement tasks in developing the capacity to frame a sociological analysis of real-world cases. . The higher level objective is to frame an analytical conclusion indicating
which theory provides a more adequate explanation of key features of the case and why.
Instructions: write an essay applying two or more sociological theories to a particular case of terror, using the
theories and case identified in the preparatory research essay and approved for use in the case analysis
essay (see preparatory essay feedback), using fifteen high-quality sources in total. Of these sources, five may
be from the previous preparatory research essay, at least five must be from the required readings from the
course (it is intended that students should make use of points identified in completing the engagement and
preparation tasks), and the remaining sources are to be additional high-quality sources on the sociological
theories and case. Draw a specific conclusion regarding the relative contributions of the theories to an
understanding of the case, and regarding the implications of the case for the theories. Important: you are
writing an essay about the sociology of terror, not a description of the case. Focus on the sociological theories
and explaining the case by using the theories, not on describing the case in detail as ‘background’.
The same stipulations regarding sources apply as for the preparatory research essay, as above, and as
indicated in ‘Regarding references and sources’ below. Further instructions specific to this task will be
released in the seminar on the return of the preparatory research essay results.
Please note that as submission is online through Turnitin, text-matching software will determine similarity with
the content of the previously submitted preparatory research essay. High similarities between the preparatory
research essay and case analysis essay indicating recycling of text content risk being considered not a good
faith attempt, and accordingly marked as a fail relative to criteria of originality, in addition to the potential for
referral to the Educational Integrity process.
Important: as the essay is returned on 20 November no essays can be accepted for assessment after that
date regardless of Special Consideration or equivalent. Students with approved Special Consideration or
equivalent beyond the date of return of results may be required to notify Special Consideration of the return
date and the attendant requirement for an alternate assessment, and may be required to follow up with School
SSPS and/or Faculty FASS and/or Disability Services (as appropriate) to ensure adjustment of their final RI
results after completion of an alternate assessment. Please note that under circumstances of Special
Consideration or equivalent and submission of an alternate assessment finalisation of student results may be
delayed.
