Essay Title: Is the Web set for a downward plunge to a dysfunctional future? In March 2019 Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the Web’s creator) told the BBC that global action is required to tackle the web’s “downward plunge to a dysfunctional future”. (BBC News, March 2019). He made the comments in an interview to mark 30 years since he submitted his proposal for the Web. Sir Tim said people had now realised how their data could be “manipulated” after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. However, he said he still felt problems such as data breaches, hacking and misinformation could be tackled. In an open letter (World Wide Web Foundation, 2019) also published at the same time he said that Governments must translate laws and regulations for the digital age, and that Governments must have a responsibility to protect people’s rights and freedoms online.
