In this article review, I decided to focus on an issue that has been affecting local areas, blackouts. Power outages are a technique used to decrease the risk of wildfires. In “PG&E and Southern California Edison have turned off power to minimize fires. It hasn’t worked. What will?”, an article discussing the catastrophic effects of wildfires and techniques being implemented to limit the wildfires, Jorge L.Ortiz, a staff writer for the “USA Today”, explains that the reasoning behind blackouts may not be as beneficial as we believe it to be.

In spite of the controversy, power outages have lowered the number of wildfires in the presence of high winds, for example Ortiz states, “Cal Fires shows fire started by power lines spiked from a five year average of 296 to 408 in 2017, the highest increase in any category of fire causes.” Yet the big picture that Ortiz is attempting to highlight is whether its the smartest option. Ortiz explains that if we invested in the underground distribution of lines we wouldnt have to use power outages as a last resource to combat wildfires and citizens wouldn’t have to suffer.

I found this important and interesting because if we had a leader who supported this investment in the stopping wildfires we could potentially save homes, lives, businesses, animals, etc. This support could be revolutionary and benefit us all in the long run.

For this discussion, I chose to review an article titled, “Santa Clarita Shooting: 2 teens killed; attack came on suspects birthday, officials say” written by L.A Times journalist Hannah Fry and other journalists. Recently shootings at schools have been very common and occurred frequently. Although, shootings have been happening in populated places like concerts and schools this article I read takes place at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, Ca. According to the article in L.A Times reporters say multiple students were wounded and two students lost their lives that day. Reporters did not report the names of the students for confidential purposes.

The reason I chose to review this article was to share my thoughts on the shootings at schools.

I found this article interesting because in most school shooting the shooters have been identified and in some cases their crimes are justified to having mental problems and I believe that our government need to help out our communities by enforcing more security at schools. For example, there ought to be metal detectors in the entrance of schools and students should be pat down for safety precautions. I think there has been plenty of shootings at schools around different areas and there should be an immediate solution to try to stop these students from hurting other innocent children and teens. Perhaps schools should be required to have the metal detectors and front entrance security officers. It is sad to know that this can happen right under our noses and we cannot predict these types of crimes unless schools enforce more protection to students. Parents need to come together and fight for more security at schools. It is absurd that we are not safe at schools.

In recent news politically, President Trump and his administration called for a cease fire and even imposed the economic sanctions of Turkey, which is an ally and part of NATO. Even though this was imposed, Turkey continues on with their plans to invade Syria. Trump plans to send some of his delegates, including the vice president and secretary of state to ensure the cease fire demand is upheld. Trump has received a ton of backlash for his deciding to remove the United States troops and military presence from Syria. By removing the troops Trump received so much backlash because it seemed like he gave the Turks the “go ahead” approval. Aside from Trump threatening to punish Turkistish officials he also plans on threatening the Turks with additional U.S. sanctions. U.S sanctions can be financial penalties that can be used against the Turks and this can also include more direct sanctions of naval or air blockages.

I found this article to be the most interesting because of the way the leader of this country, President Trump decided to handle this situation. President Trump was first informed of the Turks plan to invade Syria after the Turkish President Erdogan told him. After he was informed President Trump decided to remove the United States troops who were stationed at the border of Syria and Turkey. What I found most surprising was that the fighters the Turks despise have actually been allies with the United States and even helped fight off terrorists.

President Trump recently wrote a letter to President Erdogan of Turkey. This letter was but a mere glimpse as to how the president handles the situation and shows the language used to get his point and intentions across. One example of the letter is when President Trump states “Let’s work out a good deal! You don’t want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and I don’t want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy — and I will.” And another example from the letter to the Turish President would be when he states “History will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!I will call you later.” I think that President Trump’s actions to remove the Troops from Syria will leave an availability for the Turks to continue with their invasion on Syria as there will be no U.S military presence. I also think that the way the Trump administration handles international situations and deals has a huge impact on what occurs, and that presidents Trump’s threats to other leaders shows that his “deals” are more like demands.

The Department of Homeland Security has been rejecting Congress from visiting it’s facilities where migrant families are detained. In these facilities, children are held without proper care, inadequate food, and sanitation. According to Chloe Reichel, between October 2018 and June 2019, the U.S. Border Patrol captured 390,308 family units and 63,624 unaccompanied children. Researchers have documented the physical and mental health with children between the ages of 4-17 contained in these facilities. Attorneys were tasked to comply with the Flores settlement that ensures the quality of life for detained minors. With overwhelming results, children were affected with post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, weight loss, illness, and sleeplessness. Mental health symptoms were severe and elevated during and after detention.

I paid this article more attention since no one is quite aware of what happens in these detention centers. I’m sure many have tried to dig in deeper for investigation but with restrictions held by the Homeland Security it makes it impossible to reach a solution. There is much of what we cant see or prove.

The article that I choose for my topic is all the mass shootings that have occurred in this year of 2019.  As we know, mass shootings have always occurred in the United States, but how many of them do we actually know and talk about. In the article that I choose “There have been at least 21 dead mass shootings in the US so far in 2019” written by Meghan Keneally talks about all the shootings that have happened in the US that we didn’t even know about. The reason why I decided this article is that we only get told half of the shootings and not all of them, and it is important to bring awareness to all the shootings and face the fact that we need a change in this state, whether it’s gun control or something else.  It is really devasting seeing all those shootings occur in schools and stores. The fact that those people go into school thinking that they’re going to learn and come back and those people going to the store to shop for either themselves or for their family and for someone to just come in and change that is very devasting. As a student myself I’m afraid to go to the store or to school and someone to come and start shooting. In my opinion, I feel like our president should focus more on this problem since it’s something that is always happening all over our country. No kids or adults should go through this experience and we as citizens should help to make a change.
