In a carefully argued 1,000 word research essay, explain, and give evidence for your acceptance of, or resistance to, the ideas of the speaker in Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.” Make precise reference to his word choice, sentence structure, logic, and tone. Be sure that you understand the meaning of “irony,” and notice how Swift uses it and why—he is against what he says he is for, and vice versa. Use at least 3 scholarly articles to agree and/or disagree with, carefully giving credit to the articles and their authors in the Standard MLA format. Remember that there are models of student essays in your English handbook and online at Owl Purdue.
