In your role as a youth worker the development of positive and supportive relationships with young people and their families is essential so that all can work towards making decisions and plans for their future. To develop these relationships you will need to have an understanding of the diverse and multi-faceted needs of young people, in particular the skills and knowledge for working with young people who are living with mental health issues and an awareness of the relevant and appropriate services available. 2. Brief In completing this assessment, you will demonstrate that you understand: • how to identify issues of concern for young people • the issues that confront young people with a mental health issue • how to develop positive working relationships with young people and their families/carers • the value of supporting and encouraging individuals to develop skills for self-advocacy • the role of support and referral services to provide assistance • the significance of working within the organisations policies and procedures.
