| Background & Directions: Studs Terkel’s Hard Times is an American history classic. First published in 1970, it is an oral history featuring the voices of men and women who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s to give readers a first-hand account of what life was like at the time from diverse perspectives. In this assignment, you’ll be doing just that. (1) Closely read the Cesar Chavez account in the document set and answer the analysis questions for each box. The Pearl Harbor Attack—What Happened and Why?
Freedom From Fear, “Chapter 16, War in the Pacific” (516 – 526)

1. What were some of the geographical/naval logistical challenges the Japanese faced in pulling off the Pearl Harbor offensive? How did Yamamoto’s background, temperament (personality make-up), and knowledge of the United States make him uniquely qualified to pull off the offensive?
2. Describe why General Marshall was concerned about the specific wording in the final Japanese response before the attack; namely, that the response be delivered “at 1:00 P.M. on the 7th, your time.” Explain the communication delays/mistakes that occurred delivering Marshall’s warning to the Pacific Fleet, as well as the Japanese midget submarine.
3. How was radio broadcasting from station KGMB on the morning of the attack fateful for the Americans and, ironically, significant to the Japanese? What was the Japanese call announcing the attack once Japanese Navy radio silence was broken?
