Revision 1 Instructions
You will be adding the abstract, method, results, and discussion to your research paper. The title page, introduction and references sections should be revised versions of the ones you wrote for the first draft of your paper (First Draft: Title Page, Intro & References).

Please be sure that all edits and comments from your first draft have been incorporated or addressed in this revision.

This draft of your paper (as well as your final paper) should be about 10 to 13 pages long, including the Title page, the Abstract page, and the Reference page.
It may be helpful to review the grading rubric on the Revision 1 Assignment page for an overview of what is expected in each section of your paper.
Instructions
Run your variables through the GSS Survey Documentation and Analysis site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. For both your Method and Results sections, you will need information from the output from the GSS SDA (survey documentation and analysis) site. The information below will walk you through inputting your variables and getting your output table for use in the following sections of your paper. Go to the GSS Survey Documentation and Analysis site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for the GSS Cumulative Datafile 1972-2014.
Under “SDA Frequencies/Crosstabulation Program”, type your Dependent variable in the “Row” box.
Type your Independent variable in the “Column” box.
In the “Weight” drop down menu, select “no weight.”
In the “Table Options” section under “Percentaging,” select “Column” and “Row.” This way, percentages for both your dependent and independent variables will appear in your table.
Under “Sample Design” select the SRS radio button. This forces your Chi Square P values to display.
In the “Table Options” section, click the “Summary statistics” box, so the output table will display the results of the appropriate statistics; you will look for the statistic (e.g., Chi Square) and report it in your paper.
Click the “Run the Table” button at the bottom of the screen, and your output is instantly displayed.
You may want to copy and paste your output into a Word document at this point. You will need to refer to it when you perform your analysis, and you will need to include copies of the Frequency Distribution and Summary Statistics as “Appendix A” “Table 1” in your paper. You can highlight each table in the GSS output, and copy and paste it into your paper (once you highlight a table, you can right-click and select “Copy”). Please don’t include the colored bar graph.
The Method section should include a description of how you plan to carry out your research.
Procedure
All of you will be using GSS data, so your method should include information about how their data was gathered. Download a template for your method section with information about the GSS procedure here: Your Method Section and the GSSPreview the documentView in a new window
You should describe the survey questions associated with your selected variables, as well as the question response categories (e.g., “the respondents replied yes or no;” or “the levels of education were…”). These can be found in the research variables listPreview the documentView in a new window or in your approved proposal.
Participants
In order to report how many participants you will have in your study (when you combine your two variables, you won’t have the same amount of people who were in the original GSS study, as not everyone answered every question in the GSS study), you will need information from your GSS output table. If you have not already generated it, go back to step 1 for information about using the site
In the Results section of the paper, summarize participant responses. Also, present your statistical findings, and whether they support your hypothesis.

Be sure to include your statistical results in a format that is APA acceptable such as (?2 = 3.26, p < .001). If you are reporting chi-square results, you may need to find and insert the “chi” symbol (?).
At this time, do not explain your findings – just describe the analyses and whether your hypothesis was supported. In your next section, the discussion, you will have a chance to present your ideas for WHY your results turned out the way they did.
In the Discussion section, you will discuss the significance of your results.
Relate findings to original expectations
Summarize your original purpose and expectations of the study.
State whether the results were consistent with your expectations.
Discuss how your findings contribute to knowledge of the problem you investigated. This may include relating your findings to findings from previous studies (use proper citations for any studies you refer to).
Interpret your results
Present possible explanations for the relationship between your variables (i.e. WHY participants in a certain group were more or less likely to give a certain response).
If you did not obtain the expected results, you can discuss possible explanations for why your hypothesis was not supported.
If there are limitations or criticisms of you studies, explain what they are and provide suggestions so that other researchers who might want to replicate this study can improve upon the research design.
Future directions and applications
Discuss ideas for future research and possible applications of your findings and how they might help society.

Write your Abstract last (even though it will appear before your introduction in your paper), as a brief summary of your paper.
Length
While APA guidelines allow between 150-250 words, please try to keep your abstract below 150 words, as your study will not be very complex (and only certain journals allow up to 250 words). You can check the number of words in your word processor’s “tool” function.
Format
The abstract should start on page 2 of your report.
The word “Abstract” is centered at the top of the page, and is not bolded.
The first line of the abstract should be even with the left margin (no indent; block style).
Content
Abstracts usually summarize information from each of the four main sections of the article; briefly explain your research question, your method, your findings, and your conclusions.
Please check on page 26-27 of the APA manual for the specific information that should be included in an abstract for an empirical report.
Note: many researchers who use GSS data report in their abstract that “data from the General Social Survey was used.” This explains a lot about their data collection and methods.
Copy and paste your GSS output table and summary statistics into the appendix of your paper.
This should appear AFTER your references (NOT in the middle of your paper), on a new page. In the text, when you want to refer to the table, tell the reader to “see Appendix A”.
