1 Futures: Technology for Civil Societies

There are many emerging ideas for digital media, some of which are discussed in the various links and articles for this week. Look at each of the links in the readings and links section for this week, including research projects and ideas about mapping the brain, flexible screens and other concepts. As scholars you are encouraged to think about future ideas in context of a future civil society or societies.

A highlight of some developments with civilian drones in 2015 is the idea of a ‘network of drones’ for the delivery of material things, which was envisaged by Matternet, a company directed by Andreas Raptopoulosis.  These developments are discussed in the article “Pilots Need Not Apply: Matternet Launches Autonomous Drone Delivery System” written by Jason Dorrier.  See the clip linked below via the Singularity hub, for more on the launch of automomous drones for delivery of goods in certain environments and for emergency supplies and medical purposes (diagnostics) in developing countries.  Developing countries tend to have minimal aviation restrictions, but aviation restrictions in developed countries are still barriers for new ideas with drones.  See also the article by Dowd on civilian drones linked below.
