In most cases, reading, understanding and interpreting precedes a translation. As a novel in which important events take place around a library and the books in it, many characters in The Name of the Rose eagerly reveal their attitude towards texts and the knowledge they presume to be contained in them. Write a five-page paper discussing your interpretation of such attitudes and ideas that the characters have. You may focus on one character or any number of them. To a certain character, a text may mean the road to salvation. To another, it may contain the knowledge of the universe. To yet another, it may mean both, neither, or something entirely different.
