Assessment Task Instructions: Core Task: You are required to assess two of the motivation theories you studied in the class and explain the impact of leadership style on the motivation of employees.
The aim of the task is to test your understanding of motivation theories and leadership styles in relation to the size of a business and organisational structure. It also tests your ability to effectively interpret by using linguistic skills and strategies and subject-specific vocabulary. You must ensure that this assignment is your own work and is written your own words. Any ideas/theories based upon the work of other writers must be fully acknowledged and correctly referenced both within the text and the bibliography. It is not acceptable to quote major sections of text, even if they have been fully referenced.
Report Structure: Here are some suggested ideas for the report layout and content points: Section 1: Introduction (Suggested word count: 100-150)
• Explain the importance of motivation of employees and its impact on business. • Briefly outline the main aim of your report.
Section 2: Motivation Theories (Suggested word count: 400-500) • Describe two of the motivation theories that studied in class. Explain the key
elements of these theories, their limitations, their similarities and differences.

• You can add your own diagrams and tables to compare and contrast the theories. • How applicable are the theories? Do these motivation theories work for today’s
environment? Section 3: Motivation and Leadership (Suggested word count: 400-500)
• Explain types of leadership styles. • Assess the influence of a size of a business and an organisational structure on its
leadership styles. • Explain how different leadership-styles contribute to employees’ intrinsic and
extrinsic motivations. Section 4: Conclusion (Suggested word count: 100-150)
• Briefly summarise the main points discussed in this report. Section 5. References
• Harvard referencing – use a range of high quality sources. (i.e. primary and secondary sources, such as: firm data, market data, etc).

You must conduct secondary research for this assessed task, finding relevant sources. You should refer to a minimum of 4 relevant sources for your report. These sources should be a combination of electronic and printed sources. You are expected to use academic sources from textbooks and the Online Library. You may supplement these with non-academic sources, e.g. news reports. The notes or materials provided in class do not count as academic references. Wikipedia will not be counted as an academic reference. The marking criteria are listed below. These are the criteria your tutor will be looking for when marking your report.
Assessment reference style: • You should refer to a minimum of 4 relevant sources for your work. • You must include a full Harvard style in-text citation. • A full bibliography is also required at the end of the report.
Expected word count: The word limit for this report is 1200 words (±10% leniency)
Learning Outcomes Assessed: The following learning outcomes are assessed in this task: • Identify, describe and explain the key features, purpose and aims of different business
classifications and different business sectors. • Describe the key internal features, functional areas and activities of modern business and
explain how they contribute to the business enterprise. • Apply knowledge and understanding of external and internal business contexts in the
analysis of the affairs of specific business organisations in order to produce an appropriate report.

Submission Requirements: • You will be required to submit the report electronically via the VLE. • You must type your assessment in Arial font 12, with single spacing. • Assessments submitted after the submission deadline may incur penalties or may not be
accepted. Assessment Criteria
The assessment will be marked using the following six, weighted, marking criteria, as follows: 1. Introduction (5%) 2. Motivation Theories (30%)
• Depth of knowledge and evidence of understanding the theories. • Evaluations of theories in today’s world.
3. Motivation and Leadership (30%) • Depth of knowledge and evidence of understanding the theories. • Assessing the relationship between motivation, leadership styles and organisation
structures. 4. Conclusion (5%) 5. Use of sources and support (15%)
• How well researched your report is and how well you used sources, including how relevant your sources are.
• Accurate citation and referencing of any texts used (a referencing guide is given below); and quality and relevance of the sources used.
6. Language and presentation (15%) • The quality of grammar and the structure, formatting and clarity of expression and use
of appropriate terminology. • How well you have organised, linked and developed your ideas, how well you have
presented and formatted your report. You will receive a mark in each of these categories. Your overall mark will be a percentage (100%). How will you get feedback? Your tutor will mark the assessment and provide you with written feedback. You can use this feedback to guide your further learning on the module.
