Recovery approaches are viewed by the consumer movement as an alternative to the medical model with its emphasis on pathology, deficits and dependency (DOHA, 2013). Although personal recovery and clinical recovery are different, they are increasingly viewed as complementary. A challenge for mental health nurses is to practice in a way that acknowledges the interconnectedness of these models of recovery processes (Wood et al., 2010).
For this assessment you will write a case study for a mental health consumer you currently, or have previously worked with. All identifying information including names and mental health service is to be de-identified (use pseudonyms and refer to type of setting only).
Part A) Case Study: Explain the consumer’s presenting problem/s, history and course of illness; identify the diagnosis (if available); include relevant biopsychosocial assessment information and existing strengths and resources; outline treatment and management.
Part B) Discussion: Identify the prevailing model of care used in the consumer’s treatment and management. Using the recovery literature, and aspects of the case, discuss whether the consumer’s care and treatment/management was informed by recovery-oriented mental health practice and service delivery. Where relevant, identify how particular aspects of nursing care could be modified to ensure a recovery-informed approach.
