Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) supplies electric power to Ghanaians for both residential and commercial use.
Its operation in recent years has been criticised by people in the sense that one cannot rely on the power supplied by ECG.
In view of this, people have coined the name “Either Candle or a Generator” to replace the official name of ECG. In short,
if people had their own way, they will not pay their light bills to the ECG. Despite all these misgivings,
ECG has been able bold to request and justify for an increase in tariffs by over 50 percent, which has been granted by the
Public Utilities Regulatory Commission.
On the other hand, the same cannot be said about MTN, a telecommunication company in the country. Unlike ECG,
MTN cannot increase its tariffs ‘any how’ though there are several services provided by MTN.
Some of the services include internet and telephone services. In addition, MTN undertake promotional activities
to entice customers to patronise its services.
Given the above, examine the operations of both the ECG and MTN.
