Beatrice is an elementary school principal who is developing a presentation that she will give at an orientation for new teachers. She has written the following introduction:
When you decided to become a teacher, I have no doubt someone shared with you the words of the playwright George Bernard Shaw: “He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.” Today, I would like to counter the words of Mr. Shaw with the words of one of the greatest intellects in the history of the human race, Aristotle. Aristotle said, “All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” If Aristotle is correct, and I believe he is, you accepted an extremely important task when you entered this profession and accepted this job. And I am here today to welcome you to the toughest but most important job there is. Welcome to the world of teaching. This next year will be challenging, but I promise it also will be extremely rewarding. Today, in addition to my welcome, I would like to introduce you to the administrative team and discuss three areas of support we will provide to you throughout the year.
