Using insights from research to support planning for mathematics teaching and learning The task is an opportunity for you to develop your mathematical knowledge for teaching about a particular mathematics content area that is of focus in this unit, i.e.) algebraic thinking, probability, or statistics. Present insights from mathematics education literature about a content area through a descriptive annotated bibliography, and synthesis; discuss critically the NSW Syllabus Mathematics (BOSTES) documentation in light of insights presented in the annotated bibliography; and, present a 1 week program addressing the content area. 2750 words. APA Referencing. Purpose: To deepen mathematical knowledge for teaching about a content area of focus. To develop skills for interpreting curriculum by comparing and contrasting information found within curriculum documents and mathematics education research. To design a unit of work that draws on information from research, unit materials, and Tutorial information. Assessment Criteria – Quality of research-based mathematics education annotated bibliography and synthesis – Quality of critique of curriculum documentation – Quality of mathematics program – Quality of communication and presentation, including referencing style For the content area of your choice, select five research papers, books, journal articles or book chapters that relate to students’ learning of that concept. All sources used should have a research focus. Research-based texts will be used to inform your writing of an annotated bibliography. Read and reflect critically upon the content of these readings in relation to: – Key understandings/concepts/ideas that students are required to learn about the content area – Key strategies, skills, ways of thinking and working mathematically that are appropriate to the content area – Key teaching strategies that a teacher is encouraged to enact when teaching the content area. Your inquiry should focus on identifying key ideas of the content area, related to students’ learning, as well as the pedagogies and other important considerations that teachers are encouraged to enact when teaching that particular content area. You should interpret, analyse and synthesise research perspectives related to these ideas. Following the description of individual documents, there should be a synthesis section (approx. 250 words), synthesising the overall findings from the research texts that you used to write the annotated bibliography. This synthesis should capture the major themes that are associated with the chosen topic, as informed by the five documents sourced by you. Guidelines for writing an annotated bibliography and synthesis: When writing the descriptive annotated bibliography, you will report the research focus, methodology and research findings of each of the five texts related to the mathematics curriculum area that you choose
