Describe the make-up of the selected industry sector/sub-sector. Who are the major players? How do they compete with each other? What are the dynamics of the industry? For this analysis, you could make use of the SWOT analysis, Porter’s five forces analysis, PEST analysis or PESTEL analysis. You can also think about using Stakeholder Theory. ? Try and have a go at doing all of this analyses, include in Appendix but put all the important analysis in the main body of the report. 2. For the main product (a family of products) produced, how has this changed over the past one to two decades? If a major shift has taken place in the design of the product, how has this impacted on the operations of the major members of the supply chain? Consider product innovation, process innovation and administrative (process) innovation that has taken place. If demand of the product has changed substantially, how has this impacted on the supply chain? ? Discussion of changes in the main product design. Does it now require a totally different set of components or raw materials? New manufacturing processes? ? Mention the change in industry to include new players, or players from a new geographic region due to for e.g., development of the industry in that area. E.g., clothing in Bangladesh, smart phones in China. ? Impact on manufacturing processes, allowing manufacturers to respond to demand for better products, due to for e.g., innovations in manufacturing technologies, etc. ? Impact of consumer demand on the product, packaging impacting sizes and then logistics. ? Has an increase in consumer demand led to more entrants in the industry? More suppliers to service this industry? ? Think about how the SC has changed due to these. Some examples: ? Govt investment of the industry leading to shift in market from commercial to residential ? Increased demand has led to influence on supply chain, but at same time increased demand of a particular raw material or component has led to increased price of production 3. What is happening in this industry sector with respect to green operations/supply chains, sustainability (triple bottom line), reverse logistics and closed supply chains (circular economy)? ? Triple Bottom Line perspective: describe the economic, social and environmental sustainability measures in place in the industry. 2 ? E.g., Impact of Govt regulations on the product, such as packaging/labelling requirements. ? Impact of the product on carbon emissions, but what about sustainability in its supply chain? ? Reverse logistics initiatives 4. What support is being provided by governments to individual organisations and the industry sector as a whole? What industry development programs are on offer and what impact are these having on supply chains specifically? ? Consider various state and federal Govt departments and various chambers of commerce and visit their Web sites – What initiatives are they involved in to support industry and have an impact on SC? ? How have government regulations impacted on your industry and what is the impact on SCs? E.g., only enabling certain suppliers to provide raw materials or components if cannot import certain items, or are there sustainability requirements imposed by the govt? ? Eg., Facilitating partnerships across the industry (enabling diversification)? ? Eg., Providing funding to invest in new technologies or to train the workforce? 5. What industry associations exist and what is their main focus, especially relating to supply chain development – this is with respect to your selected industry sector? ? Check the Web for various associations that exist at the state, national and global level. ? Consider what they doing for industry which has an impact on supply chains? Eg., improving resilience, efficiency, sustainability? Facilitating access to funding, partnerships, and education/training? 6. For your selected industry sector, what linkages exist between businesses/industry, government, associations and universities, especially relating to supply chains? ? Look for examples of collaboration between various types of entities. These should have an impact on your industry’s SC, eg., on improving resilience, efficiency, sustainability? Or Facilitating access to funding, partnerships, education/training? ? Have a look at how GS1 is facilitating info flow across whole supply chains. They are working with govt, industry, universities on various initiatives. ? Are there research programs/centres being funded by Govt, which are run by universities in which industry players are also partnered to provide inputs? Examples of this is the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program and the Industrial Transformation Training Centres (ITTC) programs funded by the Australian government. See for example
