A key part of your supervisory role at Office Supplies Supreme is performance management of your team. Unfortunately, despite your best efforts. Robert’s behaviour has continued to deteriorate, he is now often late to work and has been taking extended lunch breaks.

He is often rude to other members of the team and external customers have also complained. The local truck company has advised you Robert’s behaviour is impacting on their delivery timeframes given he is often unavailable to unload or load their trucks on time nor has made arrangements for Steve or Shannon to be available. They are talking about reviewing their contract with your company if it is not sorted. This could impact heavily on the business.

Robert continues to make Steve and Shannon uncomfortable and is failing to complete his duties as Team Leader of the distribution area adequately. You have also noted damages to product and materials within the distribution area have increased.

He also continues to challenge you as supervisor and is making it difficult for Claire to do her ordering role efficiently given he is not providing weekly stock reports as he is required to do.

To refresh your mind you team members are:

Robert Distribution Team Leader

Has been with the company for 15 years. He is normally very efficient however has been difficult to work with since you were promoted. You sense he is bitter as he was unsuccessful in getting the job. He has been arriving late and openly criticising your suggestions for improving workflow in order to meet deadlines. He manages the distribution area ensuring orders are received, stored appropriately                and delivered. He allocates tasks within the stores area to Steve and Shannon. You have noticed he is referring Steve and Shannon to you for task allocation which has placed demands on your time  as this is not your role.

Claire Administrator

Has been with the company for five years, is efficient and capable. Completes all ordering of stock and supplies for the store and associated external contracts.Claire also applied for the supervisors role but has been very supportive of you.

Steve Storeman/Distribution

Has been with the company for 12 years. Quiet and likes to get on with his work. Robert’s behaviour since you have been promoted has made him very uncomfortable and he has been keeping to himself. He takes most responsibility for deliveries as allocated by Robert.

Shannon Junior Storeman

Joined the company three weeks ago, after graduating from Polytech in retail. He has great knowledge but is new to the practical work environment so needs supervised and supported. You know he also has good computing skills.

Reba Administration support

Assists with ordering – however due to an accident playing hockey yesterday you have been told she will be off work on ACC for at least two weeks.

You have spoken to your senior manager about Robert’s behaviour and you have both decided a performance Improvement Plan (PIP) needs to be put in place.

Your senior manager has supplied you with a draft performance management plan he has developed for Robert. He has also asked what other options there may be, other than invoking a PIP, to deal with the situation.

He has asked you to write a review where you do the following:

  1. Describe at least three performance management methods which could be used to deal with Robert’s
  2. Review the supplied performance improvement plan and provide at least six specific recommendations on where it can be
  3. Explain why you have made each
  4. From a resource management perspective, your manager also requires you to outline how the situation with Robert could impact on the business Consider at least three of the following time, costs, materials and meeting customer needs. For each suggest a possible strategy to assist with ensuring business performance is not adversely impacted.
