“Death of the Family Farm” by Sarah Smarsh: demonstrates how an author (and student) might make a gentle shift away from personal narrative (and out of the spotlight) into the role of observer or even chronicler
This one has a lot of instructions and a mini-lecture, which are inside this folder. Complete this by July 8, and then you use this discussion forum as part of  your responses to your classmates, as well as the forum for Discussion #2.

Discussion #2:

Inside this folder, you will find a list of writing prompts. Choose three of them, and write about 300 words on each. Post each of your freewrites in the appropriate discussion board. Do this by July 8.

Then, read through your classmates’ writing in both forums. Respond to at least three freewrites. Please be sure to spread your responses around so that each freewrite gets a few, and that no one is neglected. Do this by July 10. Your goal in responding is to note places in which you are drawn in to a story or an event, or a particular personality. What do you want to hear more about, and what  makes it so interesting to you?
