• Assignment Question:

Draw on your experience and existing literature to develop a critical perspective on the way in which the trajectories of change programmes emerge and evolve. Drawing on concepts from this module, write a paper that:

1. i)  critically analyses the trajectory of a specific project or transformational change program that you have been (or currently are) involved in;
2. ii)  reflects on whether (and if so, how) things could have been done differently in order to achieve more desirable outcomes;

iii)  discusses what can be learnt from the experience going forward.

The paper should be written with reference to the existing literature dealing with this type of change process. In your critical analysis, you will be expected to address the evolution and impact of the change project/program itself and the usefulness of various models/frameworks/concepts in this type of exercise.

• Complexity and Network thinking Outline:

Organizational change of Qatar Petroleum:

• Introduction: Brief on the Industry, Qatar Petroleum and problematic situation (Oil price collapse) and What the implication to the production, customer, development projects, and manpower.

• Critically address what makes oil price go down: High intense of Competitions, investment in develop Technology, Consumers demand for alternative sources.

• Strategic decision to maintain and compete in the market through analyzing the implication of porter’s 5 forces.

• Organization Restructure:

1. Brief discussion: The organization restructure was developed by consultancy services because they are more experienced, taking advantage to benchmark with other oil & gas company, time constrain (6months) and the limited skill of in-house resources

1. What are the changes:
   1. Lean organization (Flat organization)
   2. Optimize and streamline operational processes (Functional Organization)
   3. Reduce operational cost and maximize profit
   4. Reduction of 30% of manpower to meet the manpower cost vs oil price
   5. Reduce cost center

If the re-organization design was not developed by consultancy what could be done differently:

• Apply Business Process re-engineering in Qatar Petroleum processes and identify/eliminate waste or cost in process will help organization to overcome the problem or apply organization restructure

• Apply Single/double loop to understand the root cause of the problem and to try to find suitable solution rather than solving the problem blindly.

• Apply New technology; the role of technology and how technology can help organization in competing in the market and how more you invest in technology the production cost can be reduce

• Apply Network interconnection; identify interconnectivity between departments and stakeholders and how can become organization competitive advantage by increase and solidify network channels

• What can be learnt from the experience going forward

Discuss what have learnt from the application of different tools in complex organization environment/changes and what the impact of organization if they did not apply this wide variety of tools can make organization make different decision.

• The selection and use of appropriate, relevant literature in developing the perspective presented and in making and supporting the arguments put forward in the critical
• The selection and use of appropriate concepts from the module for framing and exploring the selected topic
• The degree of critical evaluation applied in the development of the paper.
• Reflection on the strategic and managerial implications and practical application of the ideas.
