The essay is assessed, to a large extent, by the understanding of the following texts:
Foucault, “Complete and Austere Institutions”
Foucault, “The Repressive Hypothesis” (II. Perverse Implantation)
Foucault, “Preface to the history of sexuality volume 2”
Bruno Latour, “Circulating Reference” (Chapter 2 of Pandora’s Hope)
Latour, “Why Has Critique Run out of Steam? From Matters of Fact to Matters of Concern”
Therefore, the essay should ALWAYS refer to the texts in order to substantiate the arguments.
The essay has to have argument; it cannot be a shallow comparison,i.e. only the similarities and differences. It is through identifying, and most importantly, ANALYZING the comparisons that it argues for a more convincing theory/their applicability to literary studies. In other words, person opinion is needed in this essay.
3. The essay has to pick some aspects of the two theories to compare. Do not aim for explaining the entire theory of the two scholars.
4. Feel free to add one to two academics’ opinion in the paper to support the arguments. But a substantial part of the paper should be based on the texts given, and explaining Foucualt and Latour’s theories.
