This file has the case study questions and How Are Case Studies Written
Assessment Item: Case Study
This assessment consists of a written case study of 1000 words (excluding diagrams and list of references).
The focus of this assessment is on the patient assessment, and pathophysiology of the condition presented. As a paramedic
Case Study: Neurological Emergency
You have been called to the local aquatic centre to attend to a 21 year old female who has had a witnessed seizure after completing a 60 minute training session. On arrival you find the patient on the ground beside the pool in the supine position. There are no pool lifeguards in attendance.
The patient’s coach informs you that the patient had a witnessed tonic/clonic seizure lasting approximately 2 minutes. She was seizing both in and out of the water. She has not regained full consciousness yet, and appears to be uninjured. The patient is not wearing a medic alert bracelet and the coach states he is unaware of any significant medical history.

Prepare a written response to this case study, in the approved format (see over).
In this case study, in particular in the “Pathophysiology section” detail in addition to the ‘standard’ case study template outlined on the following pages:
- Conditions which may result in seizures (medical and trauma)
- Potential problems of continual and prolonged seizure activity
How Are Case Studies Written
A case study provides an opportunity for students to research and write up a common emergency presentation which may be encountered by Ambulance Paramedics.
The following guidelines are provided when writing up your case study:
- 1000 word limit.
- Case Study presentation should follow APA referencing and all sources should be This includes in-text referencing as part of your answer.
- It is expected that the case study report is the student’s own work.
- Case Studies that do not conform to these guidelines will receive a mark of 0.
- The case study reports are designed to assess the student’s ability to:
- Present the case in a clear and succinct manner
- Perform a literature review
- Explain the A to E assessment / pathophysiology / potential problems
- Provide a provisional diagnosis
- Briefly identify how you would manage the patient in the pre-hospital setting
How Are Case Studies Written
- You should answer a case study using the following headings. It will be marked accordingly.

References:
Explain the presenting and any other relevant history? (Including vital signs, social Hx etc.)
Identify your provisional diagnosis and differential diagnoses Explain the A to E assessment of the patient (can be in point form)
Explain the underlying pathophysiology for the provisional diagnosis (i.e. what the effect on the body is). Briefly include the epidemiology of the condition
Explain any further investigations you would carry out? (E.g. ECG)
Explain the treatment (including procedures / medications) you would implement to treat the provisional diagnosis (can be in point form)
Identify the urgency (or not) of transport, and the type of healthcare facility which would be appropriate
