Because diversity of perspective and culture is always present, is conflict inevitable? Would we have attained the theoretical diversity and sophistication we now have in counseling and psychotherapy without intense arguments, debates, division, and conflict? What if Freud had welcomed Adler’s ideas into the psychoanalytic theoretical fold? Would that have reduced Adler’s motivation to express himself? In a general sense, is it better to begin with one big inclusive theory and explain all apparent contradictions through the lens of the theory, or is it better to begin with a narrow theory, with an open attitude toward adding new dimensions? Assimilate, accommodate, or start over? Which is better?
