Assignment Details

As part of your assessment you are required to submit a group laboratory report and portfolio (laboratory book) at the end of semester 2. You will be assigned to a group; this is done to help develop your transferrable skills such as group work and communication. Transferring from your allocated group is not permitted.

You are required to carry out a number of laboratory experiments, as outlined in the experimental hand-outs.  All TEN experiments should be included in the portfolio (laboratory book). FOUR of these experiments will require a full laboratory report (see separate instructions below).  The FOUR experiments which require full laboratory reports will be allocated to each group. Each full report should be approximately 1,500 words. The remaining experiments require a short report write up within the laboratory book. This should include, the hypothesis, outline of materials used and equipment, brief methodology, the results obtained, a discussion of the results and the conclusions drawn from the experiment. Any issues or questions on the experiments sheets should also be answered/ addressed in the write up.

  • The four full laboratory reports should each include:
    • Abstract
    • Introduction
    • Aims and Objectives
    • Hypothesis
    • Background
    • Methods (if different from lab sheet)
    • Materials and Equipment
    • Results and discussion / analysis
    • Conclusion and recommendations (including any issues or questions on the experiments sheets)
    • References
    • Appendices

Further details of what to include in full laboratory reports and in the laboratory book can be found on Blackboard.

You should NOT each complete an assignment individually. Only ONE laboratory book per group is required.

Each item in whether it is the full reports or the laboratory book must be the product of at all members’ of the group, and each group member must be able to explain each item in the portfolio.

Group marking – Peer making will also be undertaken to allocate marks for the amount of work done by each group member. If there are any issues around group work they must be brought to the module tutors attention immediately so they can be resolved. A peer review session will be held at the end of the module. Further information on peer marking will be given.
