Shortcomings in the project management process can be major sources of project risk.
The paper highlights these sources of risk and places them in the project life cycle. The
project life cycle is commonly described in terms of four phases: conceptualisation,
planning, execution, and termination. The paper offers a more detailed framework,
involving eight stages and a number of steps within each stage. Explicit
acknowledgement of this more detailed stage and step structure should facilitate more
effective identification and management of process risks.
Review and discuss the proposed framework by Ward & Chapman. Identify the sources
of risk based on the proposed framework. Discuss how the eight stages framework
proposed by Ward & Chapman (1995) should facilitate more effective identification and
management of process risks.
Assignment Task: To research and report on how the shortcomings in the project
management process can be a major source of project risk and how using the project life
cycle is useful in highlighting important sources of project risk. This is done by:
• Reading and reviewing the literature provided as a starting point but not limiting
yourself to this single source of information.
• To assist you in your research, you can collaborate in discussing your research
with your study team but the report is an individual submission in report format
using the VU Harvard AGPS style.
• You have to identify three other relevant articles to support your review and your
conclusion.
